Clematis

Clematis

Clematis is popular among gardeners with more cultivars being produced constantly. There are over two hundred species and cultivars, often named for their originators or particular characteristics. Most species are known as Clematis, while some are also known as Traveller's Joy, Old Man's Beard, Leather Flower, Vase Vine and Virgin's Bower, the last three being names used for North American species. The genus is composed of mostly vigorous, woody, climbing vines.

The woody stems are quite fragile until several years old. Leaves are opposite and divided into leaflets and leafstalks that twist and curl around supporting structures to anchor the plant as it climbs. Some species are shrubby, and some others are herbaceous perennial plants. The cool temperate species are deciduous (shedding their leaves annually).

The Viticellas are easy to plant, take off quickly and don't need any fussing. Some color is given the first year and a massive amount of color the second year. They come in every color except yellow and so the choice is large. The blooms can vary in size from small crosses to medium-sized. One of the delights of this group is the tendency for the flowers to make bells.

Josephine

Josephine Close-Up

"Josephine"
This mysterious hybrid Clematis is trademarked and sold under the name 'Josephine' but also has the registered cultivar name 'Evojohill', after Josephine Hill and Raymond Evison.

'Josephine's' trellised vine can grow eight to twelve feet high and wide. The huge flowers have an elaborate structure. The large outer tepals usually number eight. These will be green if it blooms in shade, but mauve to lilac-pink when it blooms in sun.

The outer petals spend a few days rolled like a star of cigarette papers, until a sunny day unfolds them entirely.

Meanwhile the inner part of the flower is made up of layer upon layer of slender thin pointed tepals that look like a fully double rosette, like a small Clematis inside a large Clematis, usually the largest outer petals are a darker pink, though this varies depending on sun exposure and the time of year.

Inside the pink rosette are still smaller and more numerous pale cream-colored to greenish-pink tepals or staminoids which look like a pompom.
